Discover Bristol with our Chief Adventure Officer

24th August 2018

Find out what National Rail’s Chief Adventure Officer, Jacob Allen, got up to when he went to uncover Bristol on a budget.

Train

Jacob Allen, 22, travelled from his home town of Scarborough to Bristol using a 16-25 Railcard, saving himself £32.30.

Cost of return journey with Railcard: £62.70

Cost of return journey without Railcard: £95.00

Accommodation

For the weekend he stayed at floating ‘poshtel’, Kyle Blue, which is permanently moored at Wapping Wharf in Harbourside. A Private double bed cabin starts from £60.37, which works out at just £30.19 per person.

Activities

Bristol has always been famous for its street art so with the help of our friends and Visit Bristol, Jacob found some of the top things to do in Bristol on a budget.

Jacob’s trip started with a street art tour with Where the Wall to see some of Banksy’s most famous works, as well as murals by other world-renowned artists.  Prices for this two-hour tour start at £5.50.

There’s also lots of great free walking tours in Bristol, like the Gromit Unleashed 2 trail. This trail contains more than 60 giant sculptures each individually decorated and scattered around the city for people to track down.

If you ever fancied climbing the rigging of a historic ship then make sure you check out Go Aloft! At Brunel’s SS Great Britain, where you’ll get a unique view of the harbour from 25 meters above the ground. Tickets cost just £10 each, but under 18s go free.

If you love animals make sure you check out Bristol Zoo, which gives you 2FOR1 entry if you travel to the zoo by train.

The total cost for Jacob’s weekend in Bristol was just over £127. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next weekend away, for less, with Railcard. Visit www.16-25railcard.co.uk for more information about the 16-25 Railcard.

Jacob Allen, National Rail’s Chief Adventure Officer, said: “Before I began this journey I didn’t realise how much could be achieved in just one weekend away. Being able to explore different places, meet new people and experience new things really doesn’t have to cost that much. It also sets you up for the working week ahead.”

“I’ve always been a big fan of travelling by train, but before I embarked on this adventure I didn’t realise how far you could travel, and how much you could save, when travelling by train in Britain using a Railcard.” To follow Jacob as he explores Britain for less keep an eye on @jacob_lucas96 Instagram, @jallen0215 and @_Railcards Twitter.
