Top 5 Nature Trails in Great Britain

23rd April 2019

For a small island Britain has quite a large selection of seriously under-rated nature trails, with spring in the air what better time to strap on those hiking boots and get trekking through the unpredictably varied landscapes – there’s so much here on offer. To get you inspired we’ve put together a list of our top five hiking destinations across Great Britain.

Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall

Don’t let an intense fear of reptiles put you off hiking this trail. There aren't any actual lizards on Lizard Peninsula, the coastline is littered with quaint fishing ports, towering granite seawalls and is home to some of the best white (read: beige) sand beaches in the country. Spring is the perfect time to discover how the rare geology sets the hedgerows, verges and coastal paths ablaze with flowers.

Things to do nearby:

  • Visit the Lizard Lighthouse and discover a piece of maritime history
  • Take a sea fishing trip and feel like you’ve really earned your supper
  • Head to Kynance Cove and take in the gorgeous sea views

Closest train station - Truro (use your Railcard to get £20 off your next trip)*

Stanage Edge, Peak District

Walkers and rock climbers unite at this gem in the Peak District with unparalleled views of the Dark Peak moorlands and the Hope Valley. Particularly keen climbers can attempt to scale the Chip Shop Brawl, Golilath’s Groove or The Right Conquerable.

Things to do nearby:

  • Check out Lyme Park, House and Garden a stunning National Trust property steeped in history
  • Head to Bakewell for an authentic tart
  • Get your adrenaline fix and try out some of the mountain biking trails

Closest train station – Sheffield (use your Railcard to get £8 off your next trip)*

Helvellyn, Lake District

Feel like burning some steam but also in the mood for something a bit more picturesque? Why not try this cosy little nook in the Lake District. Hikers have a variety of ways to tackle this climb, arguably the most daunting but also most rewarding being Striding Edge a narrow ridge, 8 miles long and with a 908m ascent it’s not for the faint of heart.

Things to do nearby:

  • Get on your best boat shoes and head to Glenridding Sailing Center for a lesson
  • Head to Keswick Adventures for a raft building lesson
  • Climb up Helm Crag and take in the scenery

Closest train station – Kendal (use your Railcard to get £17 off your next trip)*

Kerry Ridgeway, Welsh Borders

Looking for something with a little less climbing? Swap out the intense hike for a leisurely walk through farmlands scattered with sheep. Start at the Cider House Farm and make your way to Bishop’s Castle and get your fill of green moss-filled British countryside. Come prepared with your walking shoes though, the route is 15 miles long.

Things to do:

  • Go geocaching along three specific trails
  • Go on a guided walk

Closest train station – Craven (use your Railcard to get £13 off your next trip)*

Seven Sisters, East Sussex

For a classic walk head to the windy coastal path of Seven Sisters, most are drawn for the iconic hilltops and alabaster-white chalk cliffs but other hidden treasures include parts of the route which bring you down to the shoreline.

Things to do:

  • With a wide variety of flora and fauna this is the perfect place for bird watching enthusiasts
  • Head to the Seven Sisters canoe centre
  • Go cycling through the Seven Sisters Country Park

Directions: regular connecting trains via Lewes

Closest train station – Polegate (use your Railcard to get £10 off your next trip)*
